I'm new at this Con Builder stuff. When I look at the screen, there's just too many buttons to push. I'm sure there's one that says, "Press this button and you'll destroy every train, consist and activity you own." Is there a good tutorial someplace on using it, perhaps one that's titled, "Con builder for dummies-a non-techie's guide"?

Hi. Short answer - no.

But here goes with one use for CB. I use it mainly for checking the locos and rolling stock, and here is what I do - I'm using version 2.3.37.

1. Open CB.

2. Click on Tests on the menu bar near the top of the screen.

3. Choose the 'Missing Files' option.

4. Another window will open. This window allows you to check consists, as well as cab views and sound files for both locos and wagons. When the window opens, the three boxes will be empty.

5. To test the consists, click on the Consists button. The installed and available consists will appear as a list in the top left box. To select one consist or more, click in the small box in front of the consist name. To select all the consists, click on the box below that with the X in it. Then click on the 'Start Test' button to the right. You can watch the progress of the test in the boxes below.

6. When CB has finished its work, it will show the number of errors at the bottom of the window. Then click on the 'Show Lists' button to the right.

7. A new window will appear, with the list of the errors that CB found. Remember that not all the errors will cause MSTS to have any problems.

8. Follow the same process for testing the locos and the wagons.

That is a short version - hope it helps.

CB does not fix or change any files for you; you will need to do that for yourself.

To edit the files that CB refers to in your Trainset folders, you need to use a Unicode editor - WordPad if you use Windows 98 or Wordpad or NotePad if you use Windows XP. There are other editors as well, but you will have these already installed on your computer.

Depends somewhat on what you're trying to do. If you have installed some new NERR activities and want to make sure you have all the necessary equipment, the process that John outlined above will show you what's missing (and then if you log in to NETS, select "Work Order Search Centre" from the menu, and then go down to "Search for Equipment to D/L by Name", you can find the Roster name for the file that you're missing).

If you want to change the makeup of a particular consist, or edit loose consists or .eng or .wag files, that can all be done with ConBuilder. If you go into the Help menu, you'll find fairly complete, illustrated instructions for all of the various things that the program can do.

If you encounter specific problems, post them here (there's actually a ConBuilder forum in the MSTS Utilities section, down toward the bottom of the main forum page) and someone will help you.

Good luck!

Oh yes there is a self destruct button. It's that little orange BNSF desktop icon. Click on that thing and all bets are off. Laughing
