I was looking at a map of Hoodoo Pass and was wondering where this route maybe located in the real world.
I like to do some net research on the general area so I can get a feel of the part of the country, people etc... a route is depicting.

It is modeled after the Montana area, but it is completely fictional. _________________ Bob Artim

Martin, unless I'm sadly mistaken, if you look at the following pages in terms of geography, history, etc., you'll come away with a pretty good appreciation of where, what and how.
Kip can correct me if I'm wrong, but this was the 'germ and incubator' for NERR's HP which followed.

The PRRR's motto is "It's so fictional it's almost real."
Gotcha!
Hoodoo Pass route is indeed fictional. However, Priest River does exist in Northern Idaho as does Hoodoo Pass. But...Hoodoo Pass, which is in the Bitteroot mountain range or foothills of the Rockies really does exist, but not in any way of a railroad capacity. I think they ski there, hence the skiing stuff I mentioned between Wolf Valley and Hoodoo Pass. Almost every name in the route is or was an actual place. So, in essence it's about 90% fictional, the rest...all borrowed. Down below is a link to a "story". This story gives the PRRR/MC and Hoodoo Pass some foundation and basis of "fact".
